Welsh Indoor Championships February 11th/12th 2017

Last weekend at NIAC ( National Indoor Arena Cardiff ), 14 Pembrokeshire Harriers athletes travelled to Cardiff for two days of exciting competition against the best in Wales. For a few it was their first/second time at the National Arena. This didn’t seem to phase our hardy competitors who took everything in their stride.

Saturday saw the short Sprinters/Hurdlers and Shot Putters have a go. For the U13G 60m, Ella Wintle came from behind and stormed through to win an exciting Final. Maisy Foley reached the Final with a pb but a hamstring problem hampered her in that race. Lleucu Lloyd ran a pb in the heat as well as first timer, Evie-Jean Davies. In the U17W 60m, Amy Rothero reached the Final with a pb in the heat. Managed a creditable 5th in the Final in a strong field. Tegan Foley reached the U20W 60m Final where she a ran a great race to finish 4th behind GB International Hannah Brier of Swansea.

The 60m Hurdles proved every bit as exciting. In the U13 Girls, Ella Wintle continued her great form and won another exciting race to get Hurdles Gold with a pb. Lleucu Lloyd exceeded herself and reached the Final where she, unfortunately, clipped a hurdle..but still managed 5th place proving how strong she is. Jamie Zygadlo easily won through to the U13B Hurdles Final. In an exciting race, he claimed the Silver, just missing out on Gold. In the U17W Hurdles, Amy Rothero won through to the Final. However, Amy was feeling under the weather but still managed 5th In the U17M Hurdles, Wil Lloyd ran a great pb in only his second race at this height. The U20W Hurdles saw U17W Chloe Fox take on girls an age group ahead of her. She bravely ran and won the Bronze.

The Shot saw Jamie and Lleucu compete. Jamie threw brilliantly to win the Gold.

Sunday saw the turn of the HighJumpers, 200m and 800m runners. This proved to be another successful day for young Ella Wintle. After smashing the Club Indoor 200m Record in the heat, she ran virtually the same time in the Final to get her third Gold of the Championships. She rounded off her day with a Bronze in the 800m. Evie-Jean Davies gained great experience when she ran the 4 laps for her first 800m indoors. Wil Lloyd ran a pb in the heats of the U17M 200.

The High Jump took place throughout the day with the competition utilising two beds in the centre of the arena. The U13 boys and girls took place simultaneously with Jamie Zygadlo and Troy Jenkins to the right and Amy White to the left. Mixed fortunes saw Amy, Jamie and Troy miss out on medals. Jamie and Troy narrowly losing the Bronze/silver on countbacks. Next up were U17W Thea Jenkins and U20W Abi Buxton. They competed well  and it was nice to see them, the only two athletes left at the end of the competition, winning Gold in their respective age groups. To round off the Championships in style, Wil Lloyd leaped high to take Silver in the U17M HJ.

Medals won : Gold 6  ;  Silver 2  ;  Bronze 2
